Your support and contributions are greatly appreciated and will enable us to fund our missions to improve conditions in Puerto Peñasco, Mexico.
MISSION
Pro-Amigos, a non-profit organization, is a diverse group of professionals working to provide humanitarian services to our neighbors south of the border in and around Puerto Peñasco, Mexico. We are a non-political, non-religious group that is open to all cultures, ethnicities and religions. Our main objectives include service to the community and the promotion of peace and friendship.
HISTORY
Pro-Amigos was founded unofficially in the 1980's, and then incorporated in 1998 by Dr. Arun Mehta, M.D., Victor Mojica, Antonio Garcia and Les Webb. Many of our members and supporters work in the medical profession and much of our support in the past has been medically related. Despite this, our focus is always based on need and current conditions of the community to provide the most meaningful support.
Puerto Peñasco is the sister city of Fremont, CA. It is in the Mexican state of Sonora. Located on the coast, this fishing city fosters a vibrant community and culture. With a population of about 84,000, this city relies heavily on tourism and most residents work in the service industry in low-paying jobs.
Through our projects, we help fundraise to support numerous schools in the city with supplies and more donations. According to the data table to the right, most children's education ends in secondary school. We want to help foster the promotion of education by providing much of the supplies needed for students to learn in a reinforcing environment.
As of 2020 according to this graph, nearly 35% of the population in the area experience moderate poverty. Similarly, almost 35% of people in the area are vulnerable by lacks. This refers to the lack of facilities or equipment that would have otherwise provided better conditions. In Pro Amigos, we fundraise to support facilities like clinics through equipment that is fundamental to the health of patients.
